One Good Dragon Deserves Another Heartstrikers Book 2 eBook Rachel Aaron
A very unusual and well-thought-out AU, full of surprises and twists. In Book #2, the characters get fleshed out as new crises occur. Julius and "his human" manage to surprise a lot of people/dragons, but sure enough, an ominous ending promises that Book #3, which I will anticipate eagerly, will continue to make their future a perilous one.A great little series, fun and entertaining. Highly recommended.

One Good Dragon Deserves Another Heartstrikers Book 2 eBook Rachel Aaron Reviews
Enemies are in plentiful supply for Julius Heartstriker and his mage Marci in this book. They are forced to battle Vann Jeger, Algonquin’s dragon-slaying spirit, who wants a good fight with a serious dragon. It takes Julius, Marci, and Chelsie all working together to defeat him, and even then they almost don’t make it.
And then, Estella, the Northern Star, daughter of the Three Sisters, is out to get the entire Heartstriker clan. She has made an alliance with Algonquin (we finally get to see Algonquin at work in this book), sold her future, and I don’t know what all to be sure that she is able to wipe the entire clan, especially their seer, Brohomir, out.
Julius has managed to get Estella back a bit of her future, but she does not choose to use it to make a fresh start. Then Julius has to deal with his mother.
Just when it looks like the Heartstrikers will be able to start over with a new approach to running a Dragon Clan, the Three Sisters awaken to take revenge for Estella. But their assumption, not without reason, is that Algonquin did her in, so they attack the DFZ. But Algonquin slices them in half in mid-air, then declares war on all dragons everywhere. It looks as though the end of another Dragon world is on its way.
I read from both the Audible audiobook and the edition of this book. In this case, they did not whisper-sync with each other.
This is the second book in the Heartstrikers series. While the author does give you enough information to follow the plot easily if you haven't read book 1, I strongly suggest you read book 1 first (plus it's just an enjoyable book!)
Honestly, this is not a life-changing, revelatory book, but it is a whole lot of fun to read. We are following the further adventures of Julius, the dragon who is too nice to be a dragon and makes his powermongering mother, Bethesda the Heartstriker, despair of him and his partner Marci, the gifted human mage. Julius and Marci are trying to establish their pest removal business in the DFZ, even if Julius' soft heart is getting in the way of profits, when dragon politics once again rears its head.
We have the intriguing dragon seers (who can see the possibilities of future paths) meddling in dragon (and human) affairs. We learn more about the Fangs of the Heartstrikers, about Ghost (Marci's not-exactly-cat), about some of Julius' other dragon siblings including Amelia, the last surviving A clutch dragon, and spend a little more time with the Daughters of the Three Sisters. There's also a pretty snazzy magical showdown and an unbreakable curse.
Urban Fantasy fun - relatively lighthearted with charming characters. I am really enjoying the series and plan to continue with it. I love these lighter fantasy series.
To sum up my overall reaction to this book, allow me to steal a line from Marci, one of the main characters “That’s so cooooool.” I can’t help but have a fangirl nerd-out over the second installment in Rachel Aaron’s Heartstrikers series. There are just so many things right with One Good Dragon Deserves Another. Where to begin??
First, a quick no-spoiler summary of the plot
When the story begins, Julius and Marci are happily working together as partners in their magical animal removal business (think humane pest control with a supernatural twist) in the DFZ (Detroit Free Zone—an independent territory built on the ruins of Old Detroit and teeming with magic and spirits). It’s such a satisfying opening, being reunited with these two characters who are at last experiencing some semblance of happiness and normalcy, that the moment Bethesda Heartstriker—mother of Julius and matriarch of the world’s largest dragon clan—shows up in their living room, my heart sinks almost as much as Julius’s. But of course there wouldn’t be a plot without disruption of the status quo. So…Julius discovers to his dismay that his ruthless, conniving mother has invited the Daughters of the Three Sisters, the Heartstrikers’ rival clan, to a party by using Julius as a pawn to draw them in without suspicion. At the party, Estella, seer of the Three Sisters, proposes an alliance between the clans through the union of her sister Svena and Ian of the Heartstrikers, to which Bethesda gladly agrees, so greedy for more power that she doesn’t care if it’s a potential trap. After that, things rapidly spiral into chaos as Estella begins attacking key members of the Heartstrikers clan and somehow erasing their futures so that Brohomir (aka Bob ) ), seer of the Heartstrikers, is effectively stripped of his ability to predict any of their actions. Meanwhile, Marci finds herself facing off with the Dragon Hunter Vann Jeger, who imposes a binding death curse on her that can only be lifted if she betrays Julius to him within 24 hours. In a nutshell? Lots at stake here, to issue a statement from the Department of the Obvious.
While the complex plot, full of surprise twists, cliffhangers, and reveals, is pretty darn entertaining in itself, there are so many other reasons to love One Good Dragon Deserves Another. Let me count some of the ways First and always, the characters. I enjoyed this book even more than the first one, not only because amazing plot as I already mentioned, but also—and especially—because it was so immensely fun and satisfying to spend more time with Julius and Marci, as well as with Julius’s ginormous, dysfunctional dragon family, especially Bob, Justin, and Chelsie, who all get more screen time and further character development that endeared them to me exponentially. Also, we get to meet new character Amelia—Bethesda’s eldest daughter and reluctant clan heir—who, like Julius, is an outcast, but is otherwise completely unlike her little brother. From Amelia’s very first appearance, I fell in love with her.
Second, the magic is freaking cool! The author greatly expands on premises she introduced in the first book, so we get to learn more about how seers make sense of dragons’ many possible futures, where spirits come from, and what kind of spirit Marci’s cat Ghost really is (again, no spoilers, but I will say that I love Ghost even more now!). I love how the author explains all these magical concepts as a science with its own natural laws, and how she describes Marci’s spell-work in terms similar to computer programming, with precise formulas and procedures as well as bugs and workarounds. Rachel Aaron is a nerd’s nerd, and I mean this as the highest compliment. )
Third, this book is heavy on dialogue, but I didn’t mind at all because it’s written so incredibly well. Throughout the story, Aaron’s dialogue conveys lots of juicy reveals and an abundance of hilarious one-liners—and I ate it all up like candy. I’d have to write a whole separate review just to list all the lines that made me laugh out loud.
Fourth, family drama! More specifically, draconian family drama. I’m not usually a huge fan of multigenerational family epics, but add dragons and magic and I’m all in! In this book, Aaron peels away more layers of the Heartstrikers’ rich and controversial family history, and I found it very hard to put down the book at any point because I kept wanting to find out not only what happens next but also which character’s juicy backstory is revealed next.
And bonus reason I think this has to be one of my all-time favorite book covers, featuring Marci with Ghost on her shoulder, surrounded by a clowder of cats with glowing eyes. Five out of five stars to the artist!
