I am an avid fan of Ms. Sutcliffe for over 20 years. Her characters are sometimes unlikely heroes, but her stories are always loveable, likeable, and interesting. When you finish reading her book, you almost believe her characters are real people.I've read almost all of Ms. Sutcliffe's books except this one. I ordered my book thru Amazon and surprisingly, my copy was a signed copy by the author "Jeanne Best Wishes Katherine Suttcliffe. Otherwise, the book was in excellent condition except a minute bent corner on the lower right side of the book.
This one is a contemporary romance, unlike most of her books which are historical romances. The two main characters are Johnny Whitehorse and Leah Starr who were high school sweethearts. Johnny was the son of a poor Mescalero Apache horse trainer who worked for Leah's parents in Ruidoso New Mexico. Leah's father was a Senator who loved no one except himself and had the horse farm mostly due to Leah's deceased mother's love for horses. Johnny and Leah had planned on getting married when they graduated from high school. The Senator opposed to Leah's relationship with Johnny and threatened Leah with firing Johnny's father and blackballing him from working with any horses if she didn't break off her relationship with Johnny. Out of fear for Johnny's father she heart-breakingly told Johnny that she didn't love him anymore and that it was a mistake.
The old lovers had individually moved back to their hometown of Ruidoso. Since Leah's mother had given her daughter the love for horses, Leah became a vet (she mostly dealt with horses and goats in this story). In the meantime, Johnny had become a celebrity model and had invested his money in breeding horses. Johnny had bought Leah's parents farm and has financial interests in the racetracks. The story opens with Johnny dating his old flame, Dolores Rainwater (a girl that Johnny had dumped for Leah), and a divorced Leah moving back to Ruidoso with her 4 years old cerebral palsy son. She has a live-in nanny which allows her to work.
Since most of Leah's clients lived on the reservation and were not well off, Leah needed a job that pays in order to pay her nanny and all the special needs for her son. Leah's ex-husband doesn't contribute financially for her son's care, nor does he visits his son. Leah was determined to make it on her own and not ask her wealthy father for anything. She applies for a vet position for the racetracks and unknowingly worked for a group of investors, who one of them was Johnny.
This is a story about second chances and the trials and tribulations of forgiveness, acceptance, tenderness, and a childhood love that endures. I won't give all the story away ... you'd have to read it. But I can tell you that the story is heart-warming. However, I agree with another reader believing that the ending was rather abrupt. I would have liked to have read a little more past the ending. Nevertheless, it is a great story and I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really liked this story, loved Johnny. The bad boy (or not good enough boy) storyline gets me every time, and when its two people who loved each other when they were young makes it even better. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 was that I would have liked to have seen alot more glimpses into their past together. The only one we get to see is when they first begin talking to each other. I wanted a little more than that, such as their first 'time' together and so on...Johnny is wonderful. Rebecca Brandewynne did a good job of retelling the past in her book Dust Devil. Similar storyline.
I loved the book, couldn't put it down. I thought it was very well written. Just like the other reviewers, the only reason I'm not giving this a 5 star rating is because of the ending. Katherine Sutcliffe is a great writer but the abrupt ending makes me think twice of reading her other books for fear of the same type of ending. She is the type of writer that can get you emotionally invested in the story so that you wish to see a happy ending that is concrete and not leave you thinking that after all that, that's it?
Few times have i ever been so moved by a story and characters as i was by Johnny Whitehorse and Leah Starr. Their story and love was realistic and the issue with the cerebral palsy child was handled beautifully. I have been a fan of sutcliffe's historicals for many years, and when I saw she did a contemporary I was sceptical at first. She has more than proven herself with this book, and I cannot wait for her next contemporary. I have not waited in such anticipation for a book as i am now waiting for hers. READ THIS BOOK! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
Ms. Sutcliffe makes the transition from gifted historical author to magnificent contemporary author very easily if WHITEHORSE is a preview of what's in store for her legion of fans. This one has her unique signature of a strong, emotional, and passionate tale with a heavy dose of tantalizing suspense and compelling characterization that draws the readers in and holds us enthralled till the very last page is turned. ----------
The reason I'm giving this book 4 1/2 stars is, because of the ending. I wish Katherine Sutcliffe would of came up with a better ending. However, the book was a good book.
New Mexico Senator Foster blackmails his teenage daughter Leah to end her relationship with Mescalero Apache Johnny Whitehorse by threatening to fire her boyfriend's father from his stable job. Over the next thirteen years, she married, had a handicap child, divorced her spouse, and becomes a veterinarian. He has become an internationally famed model and movie star.
Johnny has publicly denounced the Senator's assert duplicity that has destroyed the Apache economy, which heavily invested in the Apache Casino and Resort Development firm that has since failed. Johnny plans to expose Foster as the force behind the bankruptcy. When Johnny and Leah meet for the first time since her father ended their relationship, the sparks still fly between them, but he has never forgiven her betrayal. Still he knows that he still loves Leah. While Johnny drives with his girl friend, another vehicle deliberately knocks them off the road. His girl friend dies and Johnny is injured. Johnny strongly feels the Senator is behind the vehicular homicide. He also knows that exposing the vile person probably ends his chances of reconciling with Leah.
WHITEHORSE is an exciting romantic suspense novel that highlights what can happen to Native Americans when the casino fails to turn a profit. The story line is intriguing, but no different from several other identical plots that have appeared on the market in the past few years. The lead characters are a warm couple whose star-crossed love will garner reader empathy. Katherine Sutcliffe writes an action-packed, dilemma-laden Native American romance that will please her myriad of fans.
