This book took till about halfway to really get off the ground and the theme of ladies' night really didn't come together till then either. There's a lot of filler in this book, repetitive things that the main character Grace tells people word for word, 3 times, like about the stupid rattan furniture in the house she is working on. A lot of useless info on blogs and blogging and decorating . This is what I consider the filler stuff that didn't need to be in there. Also, what was really frustrating was when she was describing, in great detail, everything that was wrong with the house she was going to fix, going room by room. I was ready to scream, what does this have to do with anything, we get it, it's a mess.

I listened to this on CD from the library. The reader was good.
The story did get a bit better once you got thru all the filler stuff, so it was somewhat enjoyable.

There are people who didn't much like the latest MKA book. I did. Why? I liked the fairly large cast of characters, who were well "fleshed out." And, they stayed "true" to themselves. There was not as much humor as in some of her books, but divorce is seldom humorous. How people and their friends deal with it and support one another - there can be humor in that, which MKA provided. I also liked that when life gave Grace lemons, she made some nice, cold lemonade out of it. Life does indeed go on. When I started the book, I thought, "This book has 70 chapters?" When I neared the end I was upset that there were ONLY seventy chapters. (

I also appreciated that these characters were not so very much like her characters from previous books. I don't like to feel that the author recycles characters or ideas. MKA did NOT do that in this book. The characters and their lives were different than what was in previous books.

I also liked the way Grace uses items she has or finds to make new things, as the same is reflected in her new life. Great book and a wonderful beach read!
I thought the ending was a fit tribute to the 3 main characters and how they handled the negative fallouts of their unexpected divorces. It started off slightly slowly and definitely negatively for the protagonist. She fit my caricature of the artiste with little to lean on practically when needed. The author certainly made this assumption an incredulous and unbelieving one as the story unfolded. As anyone who would b e thrown into the chasms of despair, it took the psychological factors as developed individually and shown clearly by the somewhat least equipped character who actually had the most enduring fortitude and encouraged most of the others. I enjoyed and will probably read another of this author's in 3 to 6 months.
I gave this two stars because it's Mary Kay Andrews, a widely published author, who certainly can write. I've read several of her books and always found them entertaining. With this book, the issue for me is the story and how far fetched it is, especially in the handling of the legal issues. The poor divorced woman who's lost everything to her evil husband is a theme that's been over done and not particularly well handled in this book. The humor felt forced and Grace's maturity level and reactions to situations was cringe-worthy.
I love Andrews. I first read her after a trip to Savannah, because before and after I travel to a place, I read all I can about it, and that includes fiction books set in that area. I fell in love with her easy going and fun writing style, as well as the dream worthy locations they took place in. I have read just about all of her books; that being said, I think Ladies' Night is my favorite. I think it dealt with a more serious issue that most of her other books.

Grace is a famous lifestyle blogger, with a beautiful home with beautiful linens and tableware and husband, Ben. Or so she thinks, about her husband. When one night she finds him schtupping her assistant, she goes berserk. After driving his expensive car into their pool, she heads home to her mother, to her childhood homeplace, above a bar in a marina.

What happens next is horrible. Her estranged husband locks her out of her gated community, her home, her bank accounts, and her income. His paramour takes over Grace's blog, and Grace finds herself powerless to change her circumstances. The judge at their first divorce hearing orders Grace to an anger management therapy class, and does not award any of Grace's assets back to her. even though she was the maligned and hurt party.

Grace goes to the class, and finds that everyone there, except one, is female. All have gotten the shaft from the same judge. What the heck is the deal with this judge? Does he hate women? Grace and the others soon become confidantes, and learn some disturbing facts.

The only man in class is Wyatt, the owner and manager of a run down jungle theme park called Jungle Jerry's. He also has a father who seems to have a memory loss at sundown, an assortment of animals, and shared custody of his young son. His estranged wife is just as bad as Ben, if not worse.

Grace attempts to get her life together, starting a new blog and a new major project, but Ben, and his girlfriend J'Aimee, cause some pretty disturbing and deplorable problems for her.

I think this book more than Andrews' other books, dealt with more serious topics. The trouble the character's ran into was kicked up a notch, a little darker than her previous books. Grace is made of tough stuff however, and fights back.

This book also did have its cute parts too, it wasn't all serious. The relationship that develops between Wyatt and Grace, and the one that Grace develops with a dog that she rescues bring brightness and light to the story. And you know I love that Andrews' advocates for animals! All in all, I really loved this book.
The first time I read Mary Kay Andrews, I thought they were too light, but as time went on I found myself going back to them. The plots are a bit similar but then so are Agatha Christie's - there's always a woman whose husband has left her usually with all the money and a young floozie. The Victim Wife usually has a best friend who is strong & full of adventure & fun. So you get pulled in to their friendship, their adventures and how they end up getting back at the rat-husband. Fun to read, makes you feel one of the "buddies".
